Know in Detail About Spinal Stenosis

In everyone’s life there comes a period when they realize that they cannot do the things which they were able to. This is because of the aches and the pains that develop with their age. Often we think it to be as arthritis, but this pain is something more than that. In fact, it may be a condition known as spinal stenosis. So, exactly what do you mean by spinal stenosis?

Spinal stenosis is a condition in which the spinal column that causes the pressure on the spinal cord becomes narrow.

Basically, spinal stenosis is of two types. They are lumbar stenosis and the cervical spinal stenosis.

The first type of stenosis is the lumbar stenosis. It causes severe pain in the back and causes weakness in one or both the legs. If you are affected with this type of stenosis, then you may lose sensation in your feet and experience difficulty while walking.

The most common type of stenosis is the cervical spinal stenosis. In cervical stenosis, mostly the neck, shoulders and arms are affected. The nerve causes severe pain in the neck, the shoulders and in some cases leads to spinal cord injury. When it affects the spinal cord, there may be severe pain in the leg and it becomes difficult for you to walk.

This type of disorder can be treated either naturally or by doing surgery. Thus, in the initial stage you can go for treatments like acupressure or acupuncture. But, if the pain does not respond to these treatments, then you need to go for cervical spinal stenosis surgery. Surgery may involve removing of the bulging disc, removing a part of the vertebrae or widening the openings where the spinal nerves are present.
